I Never Saw Another Butterfly: Children's Drawings and Poems from Terezin Concentration Camp.... by Hana Volavkova,

I Never Saw Another Butterfly: Children's Drawings and Poems from Terezin Concentration Camp.... by Hana Volavkova,
A total of 15,000 children under the age of fifteen passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp between the years 1942-1944; less than 100 survived. In these poems holocaust concentration camp picture and pictures drawn by the young inmates of Terezin, we see the daily misery of these uprooted children, as well as their courage holocaust concentration camp picture and optimism, their hopes holocaust concentration camp picture and fears. The ghetto of Terezin (Theresienstadt), located in the hills outside Prague, was an unusual concentration camp in that it was created to cover up the Nazi genocide of the Jews. Billed as the "Fuhrer's gift to the Jews", this "model ghetto" was the site of a Red Cross inspection visit in 1944. With its high proportion of artists holocaust concentration camp picture and intellectuals, culture flourished in the ghetto - alongside starvation, disease, holocaust concentration camp picture and constant dread of transports to the death camps of the east. Every one of its inhabitants was condemned in advance to die. These innocent holocaust concentration camp picture and honest depictions allow us to see through the eyes of the children what life was like in the ghetto. The children's poems holocaust concentration camp picture and drawings, revealing maturity beyond their years, are haunting reminders of what no child should ever have to see. This expanded edition of I Never Saw Another Butterfly is published in cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

And Yet I Still Have Dreams: A Story of a Certain Loneliness by Joanna Wiszniewicz,
And Yet I Still Have Dreams is a departure from many Holocaust memoirs. Angry, pugnacious, contemptuous of the stereotypes found in some survivor literature, holocaust concentration camp picture and honest about the shortcomings of its characters, the book is based on interviews with "Alex, " an anonymous survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto holocaust concentration camp picture and three concentration camps, following his life from a childhood in a family of assimilated Jews to his coming to terms as an older man with his memories. The book spares neither the reader nor Alex's own family a connection to seldom-discussed, holocaust concentration camp picture and unflattering, aspects of the Holocaust: the gulf between rich holocaust concentration camp picture and poor Jews holocaust concentration camp picture and how this translated into everyday survival; the refusal to see himself or Jews in general as heroes or victims; his own self-absorption as a teen in the ghetto; holocaust concentration camp picture and his "privileged" family's near-indifference to the suffering of those around them. But his consideration of his life holocaust concentration camp picture and the issues raised are just as compelling -- holocaust concentration camp picture and far more rarely seen. Drawing on psychological, cultural, holocaust concentration camp picture and historic insight, Alex paints a picture of a complex holocaust concentration camp picture and diverse Jewish society in prewar Poland. Looking back on his experiences, he refuses to find a "message" in the Holocaust. And, most remarkably, he frankly discusses his postwar guilt about his own behavior holocaust concentration camp picture and the shame he felt for his people's humiliation by the Nazis, holocaust concentration camp picture and reveals how, many years later, holocaust concentration camp picture and despite his determination to leave it in the past, the burdens of memory -- holocaust concentration camp picture and the dreams -- linger.
